The importance of being dreamy

Dreams are nebulous. They are intangible. They lie in the murky depths of our subconscious where they travel between various layers, blinking in and out of reality. Like tiny universes, changing and growing, fading and dying only to be reborn. They entertain us at night and manifest themselves as successions of images, emotions, and sensations that occur in the mind during certain stages of sleep. Our dreams tell us much about ourselves. They speak of our true nature and are a source of inner wisdom. They possess some importance but it is the other sort of dreams that are by far the most significant and it these dreams that will have the most bearing on our current lives and our future.

“Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.”
― Edgar Allan Poe

It is the dreams that haunt us in the daytime; our hopes and ambitions. our wants, needs and desires. These are the ones we can direct and it is these that can come true…but essentially the power of dreams do not lie in their fruition.

Having a dream is much more important than having a dream come true.

To dream takes courage. It means listening to what our heart tell us is the truth. Our own personal truth. No one knows this but us and no one but ourselves know what we can do if given the chance to do it.

To dream is to risk.  And the road to the realization of a dream is often a long and strenuous one. There are twists and turns and pitfalls along the way. To dream is to dare. To dream is to dare to want more than what there is. It comes from a part inside that can not only see what is, but what can be.

Dreams allow us to become more than what we are, adding color and life to life. They come from our heart’s desire.  They can be whimsical and beautiful, they can be practical or imaginative. Seldom at the time of their creation do they seem realistic at all and history is full of success stories that began as mere pipe dreams.

A dream realized can occur in a flash of an instant; in one dramatic and fluid motion. Life-changing events often happen that way. It is tempting to see these breakthroughs as occurring spontaneously and naturally like rain.

Dreams do not just happen, they are made to happen.

To follow ones dream not only takes courage but tenacity, perseverance and plain hard work. We seldom see the effort that lies in the protected shadow of success, but more often that not…the only way to having a dream come true is to make it true by never giving up.

Never let negative forces tell you “No”.  Don’t allow the words of others cloud your blue skies. Only you know what your true potential is.  You are more substantial than you believe. You have the right to dream. Dreams make us great and all greatness begins with a dream.

Do you dare to dream?  If so what is your dream?  Let me know, you are fascinating and I’d love to hear it.

  1. Dear Nancy,
Thanks for your inspiring writing about dreams.
You reminded me of a time in my life a long time ago when I experienced lucid dreaming. Even though I was asleep, I was awake and aware and could guide myself in my dreams. In most of those dreams, I was able to fly. I explored a lot as night after night I’d continue my journey.
This may not be the type of dreams you had in mind.
Still, it occurred to me that if I were to cultivate lucid dreaming again, that I’d be more mindful and purposeful. Imagine having no limitations, being able to do anything and go anywhere. Then, any challenges in your life, or in the world, could be directly addressed in dreams. Working things out, experiencing them, could build the ability to bring those dreams to reality with the extra understanding gained.
Well, that’s a dream of mine.

    1. Hello Vincent,
Great dream! I am fascinated by lucid dreaming. I have experienced it twice before and yearn to repeat it. I too believe much as you do and that if I were to harness the power of these dreams it would affect my waking life. Unfortunately my lifestyle prevents me from getting the proper sleep and this gets in the way. I too am practicing mindfulness but this is relatively new, perhaps this will give me some insight as well. Do you meditate Vincent?

      1. Dear Nancy,
Yes, I’m fortunate to have learned meditation starting several decades ago. (Yes, I’m that old!) I started learning mindfulness meditation just a few years ago, and I’m finding it to be wonderful. I’m lucky to live on the Pacific Coast of the US not far from where the Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh offers mindfulness retreats. Of course, everyone doesn’t need to go to Deer Park Monastery to learn mindfulness – there are many books, courses, teachers, and groups of meditators.
Meditation alone isn’t necessarily something that brings about lucid dreaming. Well, okay, one time on a mediation weekend those many years ago I experienced some of my most lucid dreaming. It might have been because I was particularly healthy then, exercising actively, eating only fresh food, and sleeping wonderfully.
I had one friend tell me that the author Robert Monroe has books telling how to bring about lucid dreaming. I haven’t tried that, though.
However you choose to do it, I hope it helps you bring your dreams and hopes to life, so we can all share in the results.

  2. Were it not for our dreams, neither of us would be living the lives we’ve created. I think it all starts in our imagination. Once we dream, then our hard work and reality conspire together to make our worlds come close to our dream, close to the life we imagine. Thanks for a wonderful post, my friend.!

    1. Dreams are just the beginning. Sometimes they are all I have, but what a terrific start. I drag my heels as always. life gets in the way. Thanks Janet for the wonderful comments as always. You have a way with words.

      1. I think the dreams, once you acknowledge them, hang on and won’t let go of you. They keep pushing until you begin to act on them. My harp dream lay in wait for me from the time I was 15 until I was 51. I think our dreams know when we have the courage, strength and resources to begin bringing them into reality. I am glad your writing dream wouldn’t let go of you!

  3. Dreaming is wonderful but living for the moment and truly enjoying each and every one is important too. The journey is more important than arriving, that ties in with your dreaming too I suppose.

  4. Keep on dreaming, Nancy. I think I’ve reached a place where I’m living my dreams….. except for this #$% cold that grabbed me over a week ago, with a cough like a foghorn through a miserable Thanksgiving!!! 😦 THANKFULLY, I’m on the mend now. Finally.

      1. I’ve been hit with both kinds of colds: weather and health. They have kept me hiding under the covers a great deal of the time…. getting better, but the cough and tired feeling still linger on. It’s a time for hibernation.

  5. I love the graphics (snowflakes!!). They gave the whole story such a magical touch, a ‘dreamy’ feeling 🙂 Dreaming is so very very gratifying.. our world has developed on once dreams, we heal with dreams, we survive life’s crisis’ with dreams. I always say when a loved one passes, you need only close your eyes and see them, a dream of sorts. Your words as always are so beautifully put in a way we can feel the moments. Thanks for sharing.

  6. I have always dreamed of flying – first in my nighttime dreams, and then in my daydreams too. Imagine how I felt when I finally “flew” on a hang-gliding session at college! A few years ago a friend who has a small plane took me over our valley and back… a bit different from a Boeing! 😀 😀
    Happy dreaming Nancy!
